Desert Hike with the Wadden Sea Center

Hiking to Denmark's largest desert

We meet on Mandø at the Mandøbus parking area from where we start our approx. 6 km long hike through the village of Mandø and across the seabed to Koresand - Denmark largest "desert." In the Wadden Sea it is the tides and wind that shape the landscape and sets the scene for our hike. On a sunny day, we will experience the expanses of the Wadden Sea, whereas misty weather will make the sky and sea one - making us feel far from civilisation.

On Koresand, there is sand as far as the eye can see and only few animals and plants can live here. As we walk along the desolated coastline, we may see seals in the water and white-tailed eagles searching for carrion.
We will look for mussel shells and houses from the whelk that have washed ashore - and if we are very lucky we may find amber.

The tour: We will walk on both soft and hard seabed and through a tidal creek. It may therefore be an advantage to wear beach wear. The trip across the sea bed can be done barefooted but it may be a good idea to bring shoes that may become wet for walking on Koresand. After approximately 6 km we will be picked up by a tractor bus and driven back to Mandø Kro.

Duration: The hike takes around 4 hours.
